School's Out was recorded in early 1972, partly in New York at Record Plant Studios and partly at Alice's home in Fairfield, Connecticut. It was produced by Bob Ezrin, who also played keyboards on some tracks2.

Apart from the title track, which gives the album its name, and Public Animal, which sound ‘hard rock’, the rest of the compositions are much more complex. Some refer to the musical West Side Story (Gutter Cats Vs. The Jets, My Stars, Grand Finale), or to jazz (Blue Turk) and include arrangements for a brass section and keyboards.
